Another great thing about this wireless trackball is its tiny wireless receiver, the Logitech Unifiying receiver is very small and barely sticks out from the USB port. making it an ideal trackball to be used with a laptop. If you do ever need to remove the wireless receiver it can be stored inside the mouse body, meaning you will never lose it.

The 18 month battery life also means that you wont need to be reguarly changing batteries.

The good news for computer users searching for a Trackball optical mouse is that there are many good models available from different manufacturers giving you plenty to choose from. For example, Microsoft have a model called the “Microsoft Trackball Optical” and Kensington have the “orbit optical trackball” (links to these at the end of the article).

So what makes an optical trackball better? The movement of the trackball is recorded using optical technology rather than by moving a set of rollers. This translates into more accurate scrolling and removes the issues of dirt clogging up the rollers. This makes the users experience much better, just like when regular mouse users move from ball mice to optical.

Available models, if you are looking for a good optical trackball mouse, take a look at these models:

The logitech Marble trackball is layed out more like a traditional mouse with the trackball located in the center.
It also has scroll buttons located on either side above the two main buttons. The Marble is suitable for both left and right handed users aswell as being compatible with PC and Mac. The forward center position of the trackball also allows it to be operated with one finger if preffered.

Another great feature of this mouse is the price! Compared to many trackballs it is relatively cheap, but dont mistake this for poor quality as this mouse will serve you well, and reduce the strain put on your hands and wrists by traditional mice.

The lack of buttons seem to be the only downside to this trackball, but this may only be a problem if you are used to having a mouse with three buttons or more.

The most common reason for choosing a Track Ball over a traditional mouse is ergonomics. The track ball mouse allows manipulation of the cursor without requiring the movement of the actual mouse itself. This reduces the users strain to wrists, hands, arms and shoulders that can be expreienced using a traditional mouse. The user can also operate the buttons more easily without accidently moving the pointer itself. This can be of great advantage to those with impaired mobility.

The design of the trackball mouse means that less desk space is required to operate the pc, meaning the cursor can be moved with the acutal mouse positioned anywhere. This can be handy for example if you have limited desk space, or need to operate a device wirelessly from a chair.

Most trackball mice come in a symettrical design meaning they can be used by both left and rigth handed users. The majority are also compatible with both Mac and PC.
